Hot off appearances for his popular “This Filthy World” spoken word tour, The Pope of Filth John Waters talked today (Jan. 16, 2013) with Central Voice about his Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m. appearance at York’s Strand-Capitol Theatre.

“I love the region, been there twice before in recent years,” Waters said.

Fans will hear Waters spin his hilarious observations on movies, fashion, careers, and crimes. He befriended newspaper heiress Patty Hearst after daily attending her trail as part of a 60s radical fringe group. Waters continues that same close-up examination of the world around him, spinning his observations into memorable comedy.

On the media circus and reactions around Jodie Foster’s “coming out”, or not coming out, depending on which media one reads, Waters says,” I respect privacy. I know Foster and she’s always been honest. No fake male dates. I’d like to think besides ‘coming out’ we can also ‘come in’ when we’re ready”.

When asked about Honey Boo Boo, fans may be surprised to know Waters is “not a fan of reality TV. What I do is different,” he stresses. “Realty TV is classist. It invites viewers to look down on the people, the characters.” Waters exclaims that he “looks up, not down” on people in his humor and characterizations.

When last in the region, in 2008, Waters asked: “What’s wrong with these kids. They all want to get married and join the Army, the two things that made being gay attractive when I was younger.” Actually, humor aside, he campaigned with his home state’s Gov. Martin O’Malley for a marriage equality ballot measure that won the vote last November. “I’m all for equality in marriage, in everything,” he says. “I want to marry myself!”
