Community Leaders to Participate in Staged Reading of Prop 8 Play

LGBT community leaders Liz Bradbury, executive director of Pennsylvania Diversity Network, and Adrian Shanker, president of Equality Pennsylvania, will perform Sept. 8, 8 p.m. in a staged-reading of Dustin Lance Black’s 8: The Play at the Civic Theatre of Allentown.

The play chronicles the federal court trials to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which passed in 2008 as a voter referendum to ban already-legal same-sex marriages in California. The leaders will also co-lead a talk-back about marriage equality, the complexities of voter referendum for civil rights issues, and specific details about the case, following the performance.

Far right proponents of Prop 8 filed suit to disallow public viewing of trial video. Marriage equality supporters claimed they did so because marriage opponents were unable to present any expert evidence there was any merit in disallowing marriage equality. In part, the play was created to present to the public actual testimony and the historic case summation. The play was also written to show why lower courts have consistently found Prop 8 to be unconstitutional.

The performance is a fundraiser for Pennsylvania Diversity Network. Tickets: $20 online at www.civictheatre.com or 610-432-8943.
