Black and White Party Seeks Volunteers

With plans for the 5th Annual Black & White Party well under way, organizers for the May 14 event have been receiving requests from people online offering to volunteer for the popular event. Organizers are asking for more volunteers to come forward.

To date, the event has raised about $70,000 for The AIDS Fund of South Central Pennsylvania, which provides grant funds to local HIV organizations, and York’s Family First Health’s HIV Program.

“I’m thrilled that so many people have signed up to volunteer on our website,” said Charles King, originator of the event. Last year, about 200 volunteers came forward to help staff the event. “We have community theatre professionals helping us every year as well as community service groups and businesses,” King said. Each year Starbucks sends a cadre of staff and local restaurants provide tasty free food during the pre-show portion of the benefit.

The venue moves this year to Zembo Shrine Auditorium and Event Complex in Harrisburg.

“The Zembo is a beautiful, historic space that will allow us to grow even more,” King said. He also explained that York’s Club XS, home to the benefit from 2007-2010, “has been very generous to us in the past, but we have outgrown our space there.”

Although the club did not charge for its space, King said the benefit will see savings from the move. The “party” has also moved on the calendar to the second weekend of May and is scheduled for May 14.

Each year the audience is dazzled with originally-stage numbers, original choreography and the staging of popular songs and themes. Chad Alan-Carr is directing the Main Stage Show with the assistance of several assistant directors and a talented new artistic team assembled for 2011.

Chris Quigley, who directed the indoor stage shows for all prior years, is directing the first half of the event’s entertainment on formal stage separate from the Main Stage Show.

The Artistic Committee is keeping this year’s theme secret for a while longer. Rumor has it that there MIGHT be a high-stepping kick-line.
